Studies have shown that those with dementia struggle with loneliness, boredom, and helplessness. It turns out that one of the best medicines is socialization.

Dementia individuals and their caregivers getting out and socializing has shown to increase their overall well-being. The Oconto Falls Memory Café, held on the 4th Tuesday of every month from 10-11:30am at the Oconto Falls Library, is a great place to socialize and meet others battling with the same issues. Each month features a new activity from craft projects to live music and more. This month the café will be held on January 22, 2019 where we will be making pinecone bird feeders.

A Memory café is a unique structured social gathering that provides opportunities for individuals with dementia, along with their families, friends, and caregivers, to enjoy interactions with others in a setting free from awkwardness and stigma. It is a safe environment for individuals living with dementia to meet others experiencing the same challenges and to talk openly about issues. For the caregivers, a community of support is established to help with the feelings of isolation, powerlessness, disorganization and stress.

Please come and join us. Those with mild memory issues, mild cognitive issues, dementia, and their caregivers are welcome to join. If interested in making new friends, gaining support, and learning new resources, please contact Brittany Warrichaiet, Oconto County Public Health Nurse at (920) 834-7041.
